LOST IN TRANSLATION…

German interview takes Nu Shooz down the rabbit hole of language conversion

It’s the information age and the world wide web has bridged the language barrier once and for all with the the help of intelligent algorythms like Google Translator. Welcome to the new Tower of Babel!

Our publicist sent us some excellent interview questions from Martin Doeringer of Suite101.com in Germany. John wrote out some answers and sent them back. Our wonderful publicist then sent us the link to the published interview and, because it’s in German, a translation – courtesy of Google translator.

Here is the actual interview, followed by the computers’ take (it’s hilarious….gotta love livin’ in the modern world!)

How has Tarzan inspired you to your Orchestral-Album „Pandoras Box“?
Nu Shooz: What a great question! Film score music has the widest latitude for emotion. I’ve always been interested in the Jungle Movies of the ’30′s and ’40s, the music is over the top. More is more!

How has the „nu“-sound changed into jazz and sounds nearly like Matt Bianco plus James-Bond-ish now?
Nu Shooz: There was a moment in jazz history, maybe 1959-67 when blues and latin music moved in right next door, and the results were exciting. Heyyyy, watermelon man. That was a fascinating time, and a certain way of playing, a certain attitude.

How was the Orchestra formed for „Pandora’s box“?
Nu Shooz: In 2006, we recorded the 20th Anniversary remix of “I Can’t Wait.” It’s not really a remix but a fresh look at the song. We made it with acoustic instruments, upright bass, three horns, vibes, hollow body guitars. Then we said, what would it be like to make a whole album with this instrumentation? We talked about it for a long time, then the album was written very quickly.

With the opening of pandora’s box, everything cruel came into the world, history says. But it also brings hope. What are your hopes, please?
Nu Shooz: Inside Pandora’s box is INFINITY…at least, that’s how I look at it. And Infinity is infinitely good AND evil.

Endowing un-retrieval curse – that’s today the meaning of pandora’s box. What’s your sins, apart from „I can’t wait“? (lol)
Nu Shooz: I’ve written a few songs I regret. Old band members taunt me with them. They refuse to go back in the box.

Do you plan to produce another album like „Poolside“ with original Eighties-Synthesizers again, as they are so timeless sounding?
Nu Shooz: Never say never…but that seems about as interesting as a game show from another planet.

What was the best moment in your career?
Nu Shooz: The birth of our son. He’s an artist. Also, Ladies Night’s at the Last Hurrah in Portland, circa the Summer of ’81.

Do you have a special summer recipe to share with your fans?
Nu Shooz: Bubble water, ice, splash of Passionfruit tea, splash of vodka, not too strong, and always…drink responsibly.

Any fashion advice, too?
Nu Shooz: Never ever ever ever let anyone talk you into wearing shoulder pads!

You’re featured on Bostons singer Bylli Crayones new Freestyle-Dance-Album „Presto“ with the song „Give it 2 me 1 time“. How did that come and happen?
Nu Shooz: Strange things occur out there in the ballooniverse.

And here’s the interview AFTER Google Translator:

Interview with Nick Gefroh on ‘Jazz Lives’

Introducing – our friend Nick Gefroh. We used to go to watch Nick’s band ‘Montuno’ play at an underage club called Arbuckle Flat when we were teenagers. There was a thriving Latin Jazz/Reggae/African scene in Portland OR in the late 70′s (before the term World Music was invented). Nick is a percussionist and has led several great bands over the years. He’s also shared his love and deep knowledge of Latin and Jazz music with scores of listeners on two of our favorite local public radio stations – KMHD and KBOO. This interview was broadcast earlier in September on his ‘Jazz Lives’ program on KBOO. We had a great time talking to our old friend and are grateful to him for all the hours he, and other like him, volunteer to keep all good music alive. Thanks Nick!
